Sequential Figure & Ground

Before

This project posed many challenges, along with many lessons. At first, I strongly disliked the assignment and thought it was pointless. By the end, I learned how to design outside the box with very limited resources. This made me a better designer. While I wasn’t very proud of my original final design, I was happy with the thought processes this assignment provoked. This was also the moment in which I truly grasped the concept of figure and ground relationships, a huge stepping stone in creating intriguing graphic design.

While revising this elongated, hectic, and boxy composition, I decided to take a completely different approach. This time, I threw legibility out the window and only focused on creating an interesting composition focused on shapes rather than letters and numbers. I tried to create a scene, rather than creating a word. The middle section is my favorite, with the crescent moon gazing down on what looks like a bird interacting with an orb. I think I used an impressive combination of soft and hard angles flowing through each box, without breaking any of the assignment rules.
